Early Life & Education

Sudeep Singh was born and raised in Punjab, the northern Indian state historically regarded as the granary of the nation. He comes from a Sikh family his father, Late Sukhdev Singh Jaj, and his mother, Late Narinder Kaur, are no longer alive. He has one elder brother.

As a young man, he was a state-level cricket player, a distinction that reflects the discipline and strategic thinking that would define his professional leadership. He is a strict teetotaller, a vegetarian, and a daily practitioner of yoga.

All his higher education was at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. He completed an M.Sc. in Microbiology (1985–1987) directly relevant to grain storage, food quality, and post-harvest loss prevention and an MBA in Marketing and Finance (1990–1992), which gave him the supply-chain and financial expertise to manage the FCI's multi-billion-rupee budgets. Early Career - Punjab Energy Development Agency (1992–1999)

Sudeep Singh began his professional career in April 1992 as a Manager at the Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), the nodal state agency for promoting renewable energy in Punjab. He contributed to rural electrification initiatives and sustainability-focused development projects, acquiring a ground-level understanding of how large government programmes are designed, funded, and executed.The Tribune

His seven-plus years at PEDA gave him command of regulatory compliance, stakeholder management, budget administration, and project execution the bedrock of his subsequent national career at the FCI.

The Food Corporation of India (1999–2025)

In November 1999, Sudeep Singh joined the Food Corporation of India, beginning a twenty-six year association with one of the largest and most operationally complex government organisations in the world. The FCI's mandate is to procure food grains from farmers at Minimum Support Prices, maintain strategic buffer stocks, and distribute food grains to over 81 crore Indians under the National Food Security Act.

The FCI manages close to 900 lakh metric tonnes of storage capacity and distributes nearly 600 LMT of food grains annually roughly 40 lakh truckloads or 20,000 railway rakes every year.

Sudeep Singh spent approximately twenty years at the General Manager and Chief General Manager levels before elevation to Executive Director, equivalent in rank to Joint Secretary to the Government of India. As Executive Director, he led national operations for procurement, storage, transportation, and distribution, directed multi-billion-rupee budgets, and served as Secretary to the FCI Board of Directors.

COVID-19: Commanding India's Food Supply

When India entered one of the world's most stringent national lockdowns in March 2020, Sudeep Singh headed the FCI coordinating team that managed the efficient distribution and transportation of food grains to 80 crore Indians throughout the crisis. Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the FCI dramatically expanded operations at precisely the moment supply chains, labour, and transport networks were most disrupted.

India did not witness a shortage of staple food grains during the pandemic, an outcome that would have had severe consequences for a country of India's population. International Representation

Sudeep Singh represented India at two of the most important multilateral forums in global food governance:

World Trade Organization (WTO), Geneva Participated in negotiations on public stockholding for food security purposes, engaging with delegations from eight countries. This is one of the most contested issues in international agricultural trade, touching directly on India's Minimum Support Price procurement and the National Food Security Act.

Since retiring in 2025, Sudeep Singh has contributed to national discourse on food policy through publications including the Republic and Dailyhunt. His key positions:

Invest in modern steel silo infrastructure to reduce post-harvest losses — over 30 LMT of silo capacity is now operational, with 40 LMT under development.

Personal Life

Sudeep Singh is known among colleagues as soft-spoken, principled, and accessible a leader who commands respect through the quality of his judgement rather than assertion of rank. He is married to Dr. Amritpreet Kaur, and the couple have two daughters. The family resides in New Delhi.

He is a devoted admirer of the ghazal singer Jagjit Singh and carries a love of classical Urdu poetry and old Hindi film music into his retirement. Since retiring, he has begun learning to play the keyboard. London is his favourite city, and travelling through Europe remains a cherished aspiration.

He is a strict teetotaller, a vegetarian, and a daily yoga practitioner, values rooted in his Sikh upbringing and sustained through a demanding career in public service.
